Reward
for hard work Yardley Hockey Club has made a good start to the season, winning a trophy without a ball being hit! The Club was nominated for the award, ‘Club of the Year’ at the recent Calthorpe Schools’ Sport Partnership Awards evening held in the Gold Suite at Birmingham City Football Club.
Officials of the Club were in attendance for the occasion and it was Chairman Chris Wadhams’ proud duty to receive the award when it was duly announced that the Club had been successful. The award, presented by England international basketball player Amin Ali, reflects the hard work put in by the Club in its coaching partnership set up with Small Heath School and Sixth Form College. The partnership with the School was successful recently in its bid for funds from the Lottery Awards for All scheme. This funding has enabled coaches from the Club to run courses in both local Secondary and Primary Schools. The scheme extends into this autumn term with coaching and a competitive inter-school league in secondary schools and further courses in primary schools.
The Club has long realised the value of its youth policy and runs a successful Badgers and u12s set up alongside its adult teams. The present 1st team is reaping the benefit of this policy with several young players now playing league hockey after having come through the ranks. The 1st X1 started it league programme with an impressive 8-0 away win against Dudley Knights. Both the Fathom and Badgers sides remain unbeaten after a good start to the season for the Club.
